SCHOOLS.
The Grammar School, with head master's house, situated at the west end of the High street, was founded 13 Charles II, 1661, when the Fens were enclosed; it was then decreed, that 120 acres, parcel of Ramsey Fen, should be set out & allowed to the town of Ramsey for the maintenance of a Free School in the said town, & Henry Williams, otherwise Cromwell, then lord of the manor, & six others, were appointed as trustees. About 1810, a new school house and school were built & in 1860 the present school was erected, the former school being added to the premises of the School-house, over which dormitories were built in 1880: the school was re-constituted in 1899 under a scheme of the Charity Commissioners: the school will hold 60 boys; the endowment amounts to £ 400 yearly; Albert A. Lintern B.A. B.SC. is head master
A School Board was formed June 11, 1900 (Richard Flowers Serjeant, clerk), and new schools erected in 1903 for 300 (mixed), average attendance, 260; Henry Wimam. Peacock, master. Infants', for 90 children; average attendance 75; Mrs. Norah Silverside, mistress
Board School, Fortyfeet Bridge (mixed), built, with residence for master, in 1902, for 175 children; average attendance 130; Frederick Martin, master.
Infants', Endowed, Church green, founded by John Dryden esq. grandson of the poet, in 1707; it will hold 117 children; average attendance, 103: the endowment derived from land & consols amounts to about £48 yearly; Miss Edith Crippin, mistress.
